PAGTATAP YOUTH SHOWS CARE FOR RESCUED BIRDS
By Miezy Mae Antonio, Philippines
On July 2, 2005, twenty-six PAGTATAP Youth members with 4
aspiring members selflessly shared their time to help
feed the rescued birds at the Philippine Endemic
Species Conservation Project (PESCP) Rehabilitation
Center in Mag-aba, Pandan, Antique.
These young people answered the call to show their care for the endangered fauna when they heard that a number of them were rescued at the Caticlan Port last June 28, 2005. Reports disclosed that at around 7 o'clock in the morning of that day, 25 boxes of threatened and endangered species of birds were saved by the Caticlan Port Authority. The boxes were filled with 118 birds of different species and 3 monitor lizards, which were set to be transported by a businessman from Negros Occidental to Montalban, Rizal. Law prohibits selling and transporting those kinds of birds. These were handed over by DENR-Aklan to the PESCP Rehabilitation Center at Mag-aba, Pandan that is managed by Dr. Enrique Sanchez Jr. The center serves as a temporary shelter for endangered animals, which are being nurtured and prepared to live again in their natural habitat. The Center has already several birds being nurtured, including 3 eagles, before these rescued animals were handed over. Only one caretaker and 2 part-time forest rangers were helping Dr. Sanchez in taking care of these animals. Upon knowing that need for help, the PAGTATAP Youth offered their time for this cause. At about 11 o'clock in the morning, the thirty excited young people went to the PESCP Rehabilitation Center. They came on time to prepare lunch for the birds. Pagtatap Youth president Ms. Devreyn Nepomuceno headed the group. They divided themselves into smaller groups to make their task easy and pleasurable. At noon, under the heat of the sun, they happily fed the birds with sliced papayas and bananas. These birds, among others, consisted of roquet tailed parrots, visayan tarictic hornbills, rufuos hornbills, crested mynas and other exotic but elegant-looking birds such as peacocks, pheasants, and cockatoos. The volunteers spent their whole afternoon enjoying their time with these beautiful gifts of nature. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, they served these exquisite birds their dinner. It was a wonderful time of fun, learning, and service for the PAGTATAP Youth. Now they know and show what PAGTATAP really means. |
